Semi-Pro Baseball
Besides being a Cubs fan, I am a baseball fan. My husband and I like to go to as many baseball games as possible. And, while there is nothing like a major league baseball game, there is also nothing like a minor league baseball game. We don't have any minor league teams close to use, but we do have the Frontier League. The Frontier League is an independent baseball league. Many of the players are trying to get seen by MLB scouts. It is a great way to watch some fun baseball at a good price.
We have three Frontier League teams in our general vicinity. I used to work very close to the River City Rascals stadium, so we became Rascals fans. We then moved to the other side of the Mississippi river and a little further south. People were split between the Gateway Grizzlies and the Southern Illinois Miners. We have been to games at both ballparks. Now, we live only 15 minutes from the Gateway Grizzlies stadium. However, as a Cubs fan, I am loyal. Unfortunately, the Gateway Grizzlies and the River City Rascals are major rivals. So, we continue to cheer on the Rascals, even though they are an hour away.
Last night, we drove to go see the River City Rascals play the Evansville Otters. Lawn seats were $5. You can't beat that! Plus, it was a giveaway night, so we got a mug (which I immediately filled from the drinking fountain and had water all game). We sat right next to the Otter's bullpen.
While all of the kitsch that has come into major league baseball games annoys me, I do enjoy it at a minor league/Frontier League game. Once we were even the entertainment at a Rascal's game. (We donned the sumo suits for some inter-inning fun.)
So, if you want a cheap way to see a ball game, don't forget about the minor/independent league teams around you. It is a great way to support baseball in your community and is just a fun time!
